There are many different types of computer networks, which can be used for different purposes and by different types of people and businesses. In this blog post we will discuss some of the basics of computer networking.
What Is A Computer Network?
A computer network is two or more computers or devices that are connected together, usually by cables of Wifi.
Many computer networks will have their own servers. These are powerful computers that act as a hub for services in a network. For example file storage, emails and internet access. Each computer or device that is connected to a server is called a client. Computers or devices that are not connected to a network are called ‘standalone’.
Without computer networking you wouldn’t be able to send an email, text or Facebook message. The internet is a huge computer network that most people access on a daily basis. Over 3 billion people use the internet to share data, communicate and more.
What Are The Benefits Of A Computer Network?
There are many benefits of using a computer network. Networks allow you to share:
- Hardware – Users can share hardware such as printers and scanners
- Software – Multiple users can run the same software on different computers
- Sharing – Users can access shared files and you can access that data from any computer on the network
Local Area Network (LAN)
A local area network is when computers or devices are connected in a small geographical area. For example, a house, a building or one site. A LAN can be setup to share data or hardware such as a printer, or to share an internet connection.

Wide Area Network (WAN)
A wide area network is when computers or devices are connected together over large distances. For example, a bank with an office in England and another office in America would use a WAN to allow their employees to share a computer network. The largest WAN in existence is the internet!
